Honey Real Estate’s goal: save money for sellers
Chris Petrucci, owner and founder of Honey Real Estate in Pompano Beach, says one of his most important goals as a broker is to put more money in a seller’s pocket. It’s for that very reason his company policy and motto is “Home of the 1% Listing.” Petrucci says it’s almost a tradition in this country that real estate agents charge the seller 6 percent of the sale price, but he enjoys being the exception to the rule. And even his 1% listing fee can be negotiable, he says.
McNair Park’s new blue field catches the eye, even from the sky
Pompano Beach – Mayor Rex Hardin said he could see the new blue synthetic sports fields at McNair Park from the sky when taking off from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. He did so recently, and wondered what he was seeing below, until he realized it was “our new fields.”
Keep’n It Real Estate with Rachael: Much of the real estate world has gone digital, but many of the old rules still apply
The traditional methods of buying and selling a home have changed a lot in the last 20 years. The MLS is accessible to everyone now thanks to websites like Realtor.com, Zillow and other big names. Much to the dismay of realtors, these big real estate websites make it easy to bypass the buyer’s agent, determine property values (there is a lot of debate about the accuracy of those estimates) and create an environment of disloyalty between the customer and realtor. The digital influence into the real estate world has caused buyers and sellers to ask, “Why do I need a realtor anyway?”
Court turns down developer’s request for a rehearing, denying height variance
Hillsboro Beach – The 17th Circuit Court has turned down a motion from the Related Group and the town asking for a review of its initial opinion that the developer faces no hardship that would allow the commission to grant a height variance for a 10-story condominium at 1185 Hillsboro Mile.
Commission reverses its stand on gasoline fueling at residential docks
Lighthouse Point – After years of listening to boat owners ask for permission to fuel their vessels at residential docks with gasoline, city commissioners agreed this week to permit the service. They asked for an ordinance that would allow the practice after reviewing the recommendations of the Marine Advisory Board.
New Senior Activity Center opens in July
Pompano Beach – The new Senior Activity Center, home to the Senior Citizens Club, will be open to seniors on July 17 at 10 a.m. Seniors and city officials were hoping the new building would open last fall but had to wait for final approval of a non-vehicular access line. The 8,472 square foot facility sits on 4.5 acres. Its official address is 2005 NW 9 St., but the facility is also on Martin Luther King Boulevard, east of Powerline Road.
Keeping the power on with Burley Electric
Pompano Beach – Lance Burley, owner of Burley Electric, continues to serve Pompano Beach and the surrounding area, solving electric issues and performing installs; everything, including power upgrades, rewiring, EV charging stations and different power outlays for marine, RV, pool and hot tubs. He does all this proudly, declaring that five generations of his family have grown up in Pompano Beach.

Here’s one gal who never says “bug off!”
Deerfield Beach – Lettie Cronin has a penchant for bugs and other critters that crawl: tarantulas, beetles, mosquitos, scorpions and decomposers like Ralph, her giant African millipede. She posts photos of Ralph resting comfortably on her forehead and nose. He’s not camera shy because . . . he’s eyeless and depends on his sensitive feelers for information about his surroundings and what’s food, and what’s not.
Guest Column: “Mud, sweat, and tears – that’s what life is all about”
Mud, sweat, and tears – that’s what life is all about. I was with friends in January of 2021 when one of them asked, “Who wants to do a MudRun with me?” I remember taking a long pause and saying, “I’m in.” Honestly, I believed she’d forget about it and that would be the end of that. A few weeks later, she sent me a link to sign up. “GULP, we are doing this,” I thought. I’m not one to join up or volunteer for something that’s 10 months away unless it’s a vacation to somewhere far away from . . . well, running in mud.
“What a slap in the face”: Pompano officials rail against being left off county’s transit plan
Pompano Beach – After much discussion and a 9-0 vote by the Broward County Commission to approve a vision for Broward County Transit’s Premium Mobility Plan (PREMO), the same item was presented to the Pompano Beach Commission prompting a strong, negative reaction locally (no vote has occurred yet).
Fishing Report: Mission Fishin’ travels to Islamorada for snapper and serenity
Pictured above is the June outing of Mission Fishin’ to Islamorada. It was Gage Zoda’s lucky day as he won the snapper pool with a beautiful mangrove snapper. We visited Bud and Mary’s Marina once again for our annual snapper trip aboard the Miss Islamorada, donated by the Stanczyk family.
Fishing Report: Now is the time to target snapper
Pictured above is Gage Zoda with a beautiful mangrove snapper during our Mission Fishin’ trip to Islamorada last weekend. Back in Broward, the bite was pretty darn good this week. Blackfin tuna up to 30 pounds were caught on live bait as well as several big kingfish. The trolling boats put up nice catches of kingfish, wahoo and tuna with an occasional sailfish release. The fishing is very consistent right now so I would highly suggest taking a trip. The mahi fishing was rather slow this week offshore as was the swordfishing.
Diadem Sports opens area’s first indoor court dedicated to pickleball
Coconut Creek – Ryan Meldrum came away impressed after taking part in an open play session at the recent grand opening of the Diadem Indoor Pickleball Complex at Broward College’s North Campus. The Pompano Beach-based Diadem Sports has built South Florida’s first dedicated indoor pickleball complex in an...
Guest Column: “But the memories are wonderful!”
I read the recent letter in The New Pelican by Clarke Bowman with mixed emotions. I was both happy to read a tribute to Pompano Park by Veral Bowman’s grandson and so very sad to note its final demise as the clubhouse is torn down. Harness racing there put Pompano Beach on the tourism maps when it was still basically an agricultural town with its high school students proudly nicknamed “Beanpickers.” Snowbirds flocked to the track to enjoy the “Winter Capital of Harness Racing.”
A year later, renovated Aquatics Center remains closed awaiting the state’s approval
Deerfield Beach – The Aquatics Center, closed last year in June for renovations expected to take four to six months, remains off limits for swimmers. Needed to reopen following a $1.6 million renovation, is a variance to be approved by a state board that meets only six times a year.
Guest Columnist: “There are different levels of homelessness that are not acknowledged”
I am a volunteer at a local homeless mission, and I love and respect the people we work with. I am becoming increasingly aware that our communities have many misconceptions about the homeless. There are different levels of homelessness that are not acknowledged. Thus, many who are in crisis and need short term help to exit their situation don’t get it because they are unintentionally seen as panhandlers, begging for beer or drug money.
Catching the Ocean View: Dive into summer now and prepare for lobster season
It’s officially summer in South Florida so take the plunge and dive into the ocean. The water temperature is over 80 degrees so all of you locals can now get wet. Our biggest underwater holiday will be here soon so now it’s time to prepare for the upcoming spiny lobster mini season. Spiny lobster mini season is the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July and this year it falls on July 26 and 27.
