Searching for Baby Wright
Columbo, Kojak, and Magnum P.I., we need you. Lighthouse Point – I realize now how hard it must be working as a detective. Where does one even start to search for clues?. I’ve been playing gumshoe myself the past few weeks. The object of my search: locating the first baby born in Lighthouse Point. According to the city’s website, the first baby born in what a few years later would officially become Lighthouse Point was Cynthia Ann Wright; born Dec. 23, 1953. Her parents lived in one of the earliest developments in the area, Hillsboro Isles.
HerStory: Hillsboro’s connection to a 130-year-old maritime mystery
One of the best known maritime mysteries became a local landmark when pieces of it came ashore and set the ambiance for the legendary The Barefoot Mailman restaurant. The story comes with still unsolved mysteries. In January of 1976, an article by Sharon Hodges appeared in the Deerfield Beach Observer...
Landscaper’s past leads to loss of $1.3 million contract
Deerfield Beach – The issue was whether the city can give a contractor a break or must abide by the rules set forth in the bid process. Tuesday, commissioners here decided they must follow the rules or risk opening the city up to a lawsuit. The situation arose when...
Resources, Events, Meetings, and More – Week of April 6
Drinking water free chlorination, by City of Fort Lauderdale. The City of Fort Lauderdale will temporarily switch to using free chlorine in its drinking water system beginning at 9 a.m. on April 18 through 9 a.m. on May 9. Free chlorination is a common preventative maintenance procedure for water systems using chloramines for disinfection. The city expects the chlorination period to be transparent to our neighbors; however, some may notice a slight change in the taste or smell of their tap water. In addition, neighbors may see fire hydrants running in their neighborhoods, which is part of the normal maintenance process. The cities of Oakland Park, Wilton Manors, and part of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea also get their drinking water from Fort Lauderdale and will be impacted. Visit fortlauderdale.gov/lauderserv or call 954-828-8000 for more information.
New sand for town’s beaches will come ashore next week
Hillsboro Beach – An historic beach nourishment project, being managed by an agreement with neighboring cities Boca Raton and Deerfield Beach, has begun. A dredge began mining the Boca Inlet Shoal last Friday and is expected to have sand on Boca’s south beach by the end of this week.
Before you play pickleball, take steps to avoid injury
As the popularity of pickleball increases by leaps and bounds, the number of injuries attributed to the sport is also increasing, according to medical professionals. Dr. Jason Walters, an orthopedic surgeon at Broward Health, is seeing his share of injuries, especially of the knees, shoulders and elbows. Because the sport – sometimes referred to as “old people tennis” – has become established as the favorite pastime of many retirees down here in South Florida, a significant number of injuries are in that age bracket.
Catching the Ocean View: Lionfish is still on the menu
During the month of April the Chiefy Crew is dedicated to targeting lionfish. The Crew just finished a great spiny lobster season on March 31 and are waiting for the grouper and hogfish season to start May 1. We’ve put away the lobster nets, snares and bags, as lionfish is on the menu for the month of April.
Commission votes to prohibit cleaning fish at Alsdorf Park
Pompano Beach – The city has no plans to install new fish cleaning tables at Alsdorf Park to replace the ones that were removed after a six-month trial. The city commission, voting 4-2 at the March 28 meeting, failed to designate an alternative area of the park for fish cleaning.
When it comes to upgrading their school’s playgrounds, these parents won’t bury their heads in the sand
Deerfield Beach – When resident Tina Linn succeeds in her quest to have two playgrounds at Quiet Waters Park Elementary School upgraded, the only ones not happy will be some of the wild critters from the adjacent county park. Linn, the mother of a second-grader at the school, has...
Early detection of colorectal cancer saves lives
With a significant increase in colorectal cancer diagnoses in people under 55, experts are recommending that certain patients get screened at younger ages to aid early detection. The American Cancer Society found that the number of people diagnosed with colon cancer ages 55 or younger has nearly doubled, jumping from...
Dockside fueling is again an issue; this time commission agrees to further review
Lighthouse Point – There is the possibility of a sea change when it comes to a longstanding issue: the city’s ordinance that prohibits fueling boats at residential docks. It’s a policy that has residents asking why Lighthouse Point is the only city in Florida that doesn’t allow the service? There seems no clear answer as to why the ordinance is in the city’s code book at all. But Fire Chief Robert Weech and Mayor Kyle Van Buskirk had an answer.
Cove Brewery will make history as first in Deerfield Beach
Deerfield Beach – Two local, well-known names in the food and beverage industry are collaborating to bring this city its first brewery. The Cove Brewery, first announced three years ago, is poised to open sometime in May. One of the owners, brewmaster Corey Wilson, most recently from Crazy Mike’s in Boca Raton, a brewery/music venue, has spent 15 years in the craft beer business. On the brewery’s website he talks about creating “new IPA’s” that describe the lifestyle here: Heat Wave, Tan Man, and Tide & Seek as well as “the simple joy of a real lager.”
Viewpoints – Week of March 30
“But for the people of Pompano Beach, only you can right the ship”. The March 16 New Pelican really piqued my interest. First, all the gang-bang shootings in Pompano Beach have people pushing for unConstitutional gun reforms. Please do read the 2nd Amendment. Second, gun laws only hurt the law...
Five outstanding women awarded their place in local history
Deerfield Beach – Four volunteers and a city employee were recognized Saturday for their good works in this community at the Women’s History Hall of Fame breakfast. The annual event celebrates Women’s History Month and this year’s honorees were Karen Hardy, Maureen Kenny, Flora Philpart and Joan Williams, each nominated by their city commissioner. The fifth honoree, a longtime member of the parks and recreation department, was Mary Davis, nominated for the award by Mayor Bill Ganz.

Fishing Report: Big Swords on tap for the weekend
We should see some big broadbill swordfish landed this weekend. Over the last few days several fish were boated over 400 pounds. The bite was excellent from Palm Beach to Miami as we have a migration of large swordfish here now. The best of the bite has been on the deeper side around 1,700 feet of water and the best bait this week was bonito and squid tentacle.
