Open house marks official opening of Braithwaite Center
Deerfield Beach – The opening of the Braithwaite Center for Active Aging was celebrated earlier this month with the usual flourishes: free food, speeches, the photo-op ribbon cutting, tours of the 22,000 square foot center, and a standing-room only crowd. Providing senior citizens and Alzheimer’s patients a home away...
Commission approves long awaited hotel project
Wilton Manors – A hotel in Wilton Manors is one step closer to becoming a reality. City commissioners gave developers for the Wilton Hotel & Pool Club approval last week. The developer had three requests of the commission: to change the zoning of the property located at 2505 N. Dixie Hwy., the Five Points intersection, from Arts & Entertainment District to Planned Unit Development – Commercial; execution of a developer’s agreement and execution of a declaration of restrictive covenants.
“We have the perfect city for it”: Wilton Manors’ annual birthday party leans into its unique Island City character
Wilton Manors – While most cities only commemorate their big anniversaries, Wilton Manors celebrates its incorporation – May 13, 1947 – every year with a canoe race and birthday bash. “It just brings the community together . . . We take pride in it,” said Mayor Scott...
Moss, Perkins get into heated exchange over history display’s removal
Pompano Beach – Despite a failed motion to remove a controversial historical display in the hallway of the commission chambers, the display was removed anyway. Spurred on by resident Jackie Moreland, who said the display did not include enough of the contributions of the city’s black residents, the motion to remove it was made by Commissioner Beverly Perkins at the April 23 commission meeting. It failed because only Commissioner Alison Fournier backed Perkins.
Waking Up: The afterlife film festival
In 1979, a psychiatrist named Raymond Moody, who had interviewed 150 people with near-death experiences, wrote a book called Life After Life. Hollywood has churned out film after film about life after life. Here’s a baker’s dozen that would make a terrific Afterlife Film Festival. We’d need a heavenly place to screen a collection of such divine cinematic treats.
Catching the Ocean View: See below the waves without getting wet: Pompano Beach unveils its new underwater pier camera
An underwater view just became available at the Fisher Family Pier in Pompano Beach without having to take the plunge. Donated by the non-profit Shipwreck Park, the “View Into The Blue” camera is the newest high-resolution webcam in our area. Deerfield Beach has a camera at its International Fishing Pier and a second underwater Pompano Beach camera is planned for Wahoo Bay, at the Roy L. Rogers Family Park at the Hillsboro Inlet. The city already has a camera that provides an above water view of the inlet.
HerStory: An unintended assassination
Just two weeks before his inauguration, Franklin D. Roosevelt arrived at Bayfront Park in Miami to speak from the back seat of his light-blue Buick. Just 25 feet away, an Italian immigrant, Giuseppe Zangara, standing on a chair in order to see over the crowd as he was only 5 ‘1, aimed his .32 caliber pistol at Roosevelt on Feb. 15, 1933. Statistically, the job of U.S. president is one of the most dangerous in the world. Four have been assassinated: Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy; and there were many more unsuccessful attempts.
Appeal delays pier cafe payment; beach chair service approved by city, criticized by some residents
Deerfield Beach – Class Act Restaurants, operators of the Pier Cafe, has appealed a magistrate’s order to pay $437,000 in lease payments to the city. That action is delaying the payments, which were due by May 1, until a judge can review the order and make a decision. City Manager David Santucci said this week he is hopeful the judge will rule in early July.
Guest Column: Pets, vets, and the fur baby set
Maybe I’m biased; but I can’t look a homeless dog in the face without wanting to feed it, pat it, love it, give it water, take it home, bathe it, get it shots, and have it spayed or neutered. I can never understand why people aren’t humane enough to have the sterilization procedure done.
Florida archivists exploring local history at their annual conference
Deerfield Beach – Archivists spend hours with musty papers, faded photos, outdated maps, reams of government documents and relics of the past. So who would want to do that?. Apparently, a lot of people. One of them is Michael Zaidman, who as keeper of corporate history at JM Family Enterprises and archivist for the local historical society, is among those hosting the Florida Archivists Society this week at its annual meeting at the Wyndham Resort.

But nothing compared to the huge crowd that awaited him and 67 of his fellow veterans that night as...
Chaz v. Chip: Activist sues state rep, accusing him of violating his First Amendment rights
Political activist Chaz Stevens has a history of unusual protests, typically involving conversations about religious influence in government and public life. In 2013, Stevens erected a Festivus Pole, inspired by the television show “Seinfeld” in Florida’s Capitol, to protest a Nativity Scene that was installed there. He also erected the pole in Deerfield Beach. More recently, he unsuccessfully petitioned Broward Schools to remove the King James Bible from school libraries, saying that the holy book’s depictions of rape, incest, and murder are inappropriate for children.
