Study will show if vehicle sensors detect cognitive functions in older drivers
A new study underway at the FAU College of Nursing is testing devices that may indicate a driver’s declining memory. The research program, funded by a $5.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, is under the auspices of Dr. Ruth Tappen. So far, 100 people are enrolled, but Tappen hopes to enlist at least 500 volunteers for the three-year initiative.

Staff report aims to clear the air on CRA and city eminent domain actions; Perkins has doubts
Pompano Beach – Mayor Rex Hardin, chair of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), has shared results of a review of the state’s eminent domain laws, which give governments the power to forcibly purchase land from private owners. Hardin requested the search at the Sept. 20 CRA meeting. The...
Eye on the Arts: ArtServe serves up a new mural
If you have driven or walked past ArtServe on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale during this past month, you may have noticed that a new mural was being painted on the west and north facing walls. If you saw it only in its early stage or haven’t seen it at all yet, you’re in for a visual treat.
Construction agreements approved for new $16 million fire station project
Oakland Park – After years of planning, city officials are finally one step closer toward breaking ground on a new $16 million fire station. City commissioners recently voted to approve both a construction services agreement and work authorization for Fire Station No. 9 – one of several projects outlined in the city’s comprehensive 10-year facilities plan.
Washed up yacht could be removed as early as next week
Pompano Beach – Hurricane Nicole largely skirted South Florida, but one of its few victims here is still washed up. A beached yacht located a few feet north of Northeast 16 Street has become a mini tourist attraction, a mild obstacle for beachgoers and kite surfers, and a target for vandals.
Neighborhood collaboration is in season at Patricia Davis Community Garden
Pompano Beach – Sometimes it may seem like the only thing as abundant as vacant land in the Northwest CRA is debate over what to do with it all. But one project has been taking root and may serve as a template for how the city and its partners can collaborate to best serve the community. What was once three vacant lots adjacent to Blanche Ely High School has been cultivated into the Patricia Davis Community Garden, a full acre initiative established by the CRA in 2018.
Family center, a rare benefit for parents, offered to JM Family associates

Fishing Report: Wahoo bite pushes farther offshore
Pictured here is AJ Castronovo and Max Placter with a pair of wahoo from a few days back. Until recently most of the good wahoo fishing was around 200 to 225 feet of water. These boys had a couple of really solid days catching not only these fish but another wahoo the next day out to 400-plus feet. We must remember there are no fences when it comes to fishing or highly migratory species like the wahoo. If you are fishing this weekend be sure to go out a bit deeper to try and land one of these awesome eating fish.
“Developers should be required to set aside land for a wildlife refuge”
In view of the blatant disregard for all the wildlife and the endangered burrowing owls that has been shown by the Isle Casino and its construction company at the former Pompano Park Raceway on Powerline Road, I believe it is necessary that cities create a mandate for those seeking to build on and destroy our green space. Developers should be required to set aside land for a wildlife refuge. I am sincerely hoping this can be enacted. And instead of building new strip malls, find ways to use them instead. There are so many buildings that can be put to good use. Buy those areas instead of taking land and destroying more green space.

Family, friends will celebrate 110-year-old with drive-by birthday celebration

Fishing Report: Charter crew eating fish for Thanksgiving
The rough sea conditions made it tough to get out all week. For the boats that braved the elements, we were all rewarded. Pictured here is the Tom Burnett party fishing aboard the Lisa B a few days back showing a nice catch of mahi-mahi. With all of the rough...
More than just turkey: Pre-Thanksgiving meals and giveaways inspired by camaraderie, charity
Despite higher food costs and an avian flu that, according to the Washington Post, has killed more than six million turkeys this year, many South Florida organizations and religious groups still found a way to put thousands of birds into needy kitchens. “This is a blessing,” said Myosha Moreland about...
Blanche Ely moves to 10-0 with playoff win over Dillard, plays next game Friday
Pompano Beach – Blanche Ely football coach Michael Bailey has the Tigers in uncharted waters following a hard-fought, 19-14 win over rival Dillard on Saturday. Undefeated Blanche Ely (10-0), won their lone state championship 20 years ago under Steve Davis and is still alive in the postseason. They will face their toughest competition this year when they travel Friday to take on St. Thomas, the nation’s No. 8 ranked team.
There is still much to be thankful for
They risked their lives crossing the Straits of Florida in a vessel that barely looks worthy enough for a calm day on a lake. They were a group of Cuban refugees, landing in Pigeon Key in July. “Huddled” for sure, as Emma Lazarus’ poem, inscribed on the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal, reads; but not quite the “masses” she witnessed coming into New York harbor in her day.
