A feeling of gratitude permeates various Veterans Day ceremonies
With the same sentiment that came out of World War I, envisioned as the “war that will end war” by author H.G. Wells, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Commissioner Randy Strauss hoped for a future free of conflict. “Hopefully, wars will end. But we’ll still honor our veterans,” said Strauss at the...

Out of the Pulpit: “We are all called to do everything we can to help those in need”
An August New Pelican article, “Humanity and Hostility,” demonstrated how absolutely nothing matters more than the Great Commandment. “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27). The end of Matthew chapter 25 makes it clear that while we are called to love God in all things at all times, the absolute best, most direct, way to God is to love our neighbor.
Waking Up: Changes in gratitude, changes in attitude
For quite some time, the annual holiday of Thanksgiving has become a gluttonous day of overeating turkey, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mashed potatoes. In the past few years, political arguments with family members have marred what is ordinarily a day of family gathering, bringing relatives from all over the country back together again.

The projected playoff push for the Blanche Ely football team hit an unexpected hurdle on Saturday as its game against host Dillard was ruled a no-contest following a commotion that started near the stands behind the Tigers’ bench. The 52nd annual Soul Bowl game was halted with 7:49 remaining...
Charter review committee may be facing a major task
Lighthouse Point – This city was created in 1956 by early resident Frank McDonough and his bowling buddies who regularly adjourned after league play to the Buccaneer Lounge to discuss matters of the day. Deciding they wanted to incorporate this three square mile community abutting Pompano Beach, they enlisted Deerfield Beach attorney Russell Clarke who drew up the incorporation papers and the city charter.
Dental Decisions: Dental procedures for good senior oral health
We’re not getting any younger. How many times have you heard this lament? It’s true, nobody’s growing young, but thanks to medical and technological advancements, people are living longer than ever. Of course, it means taking better care of your health, including your oral health. Like every other aspect of your healthcare, seniors need to approach oral health in a slightly different way. It might mean switching up your regular oral care routine to include some new steps or products. Or it could mean addressing some dental issues you put off for too long. With so many factors working against you, a solid oral care routine is more important than ever.

Eye on the Arts: Wilton Manors says, “Let it rain”
They say it takes a village to raise a child. To create a seedbed for the arts, it takes a city such as Wilton Manors. The most recent example of the Island City’s commitment to the arts is letitrain.2022, a community-sponsored public art installation. Last weekend, some 20 motivated residents who live in and near Wilton Manors participated in front of city hall, where the first of three installations took place on a sidewalk and bench. They worked as a single team in one location at a time. The second installation took place on the sidewalk in front of and along the driveway to the Shoppes of Wilton Manors. And the third was in Hagen Park, along the walkway from the Community Center building to the Island City Cultural Center.

Hillsboro Beach – Commissioners reached a consensus with the owners of the Hillsboro Beach Resort last week regarding use of the hotel for special events. In an effort to limit activities so as to not impact the residents, the number of social events will be limited to 24 a year, business meetings will be only from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., all events will be limited to 65 guests, off-duty police officers will be hired to monitor traffic, and the resort will hire an outside firm to audit special events monthly and submit those findings to the city manager.

HerStory: Lighthouse keeper raised his family at the Hillsboro Inlet
Over its 100-plus years, 27 men have tended the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse. The first was Alfred Berghell who left his post in 1911. The second was Thomas Knight who raised his family in a cottage at the Coast Guard Station located on the lighthouse grounds. He had deep roots in Florida. His grandfather was Capt. Mills Olcott Burnham, a Vermont Yankee who came to Duval County in 1837. He became sheriff there and later went on to the state legislature.
