Soroptimists’ annual fundraiser aimed at improving the lives of women
Pompano Beach – Improving the lives of women is the primary focus of Soroptimist International, and the local chapter has been faithful to that mission for over 30 years. Specifically, the members provide college scholarships for women who are sole supporters of their families and to graduating high school seniors who have been recognized for their charitable work. Amounts that go to those grants annually range from $8,000 to $12,000 depending on the club’s fundraising efforts.

Wilton Manors – Commissioners authorized charitable contributions to Family Central, Inc. and the Poverello Center at their Feb. 13 meeting. Family Central, an affiliate of Kids in Distress, received $6,000. A nationally-accredited agency located in Wilton Manors, it provides educational training, family strengthening, early learning, and a federal child care food program. The funds will be utilized for a free 20-week parent leadership program.
Wilton Drive hotel proposal moves forward
Wilton Manors – The possibility of a hotel coming to Wilton Manors took a big step forward when the Planning and Zoning Board voiced their support at their Feb. 12 meeting. Developers for the project, dubbed the Wilton Hotel & Pool Club, brought two requests to the board: to change the zoning of the property located at 2505 N. Dixie Hwy., the Five Points intersection, from Arts & Entertainment District (WDAE) to Planned Unit Development – Commercial, and to approve the site plan.

Kiosks will help enforce two-hour parking limits in Cove Shopping Center
Deerfield Beach – Drivers to the Cove Shopping Center can expect enforcement of the two-hour parking limit there in the not so distant future. On Tuesday, the Community Redevelopment Agency Board (CRA), composed of the city commission, approved a $115,000 contract to buy 13 parking kiosks for the center’s parking lot. The purpose is better enforcement of the two-hour limit on spaces fronting businesses in the retail, medical and restaurant center.
