Dogs and humans alike celebrate city’s second dog park
Oakland Park – Mother Nature must be a dog lover. Despite gloomy, gray skies and a 70 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms, the forecasted inclement weather was kind enough to hold off until well after grand-opening ceremonies at the city’s second dog park, Wag Dog Park, located at Richard E. Giusti Park, 600 NE 38 St.
Viewpoints: This familiar rags-to-riches tale may mirror the Ukraine-Russian conflict
Spoiler alert: Do not expect this to read like an in-depth theater aficionado’s expert critique of a ballet. Yes, this writer has been to a few ballets, and even a classical music concert and an opera or two before, but my overall technical knowledge in such matters is – I admit – somewhat limited.

“A great number of people desire to lend a hand without expecting anything in return”. I asked a friend to bring my Amazon returns to my local UPS Store. If you have ever returned something to Amazon via UPS, you must supply a return code with your product. Instead of going into the store, he placed my returns in a UPS bin. Since my returns were not labeled, the UPS driver did not take them and, unfortunately, placed them on the ground close to the box.
Guest Column: “It is your rock, your mountain”
There is an ancient Greek tale of a man named Sisyphus. He was a playful trickster who played pranks on everyone, including the gods. One day he fooled the god of death and locked him in a cupboard. Of course, the death god was not too pleased and when the other gods eventually released him, he condemned Sisyphus to an eternity of rolling a large, heavy boulder up a mountain. When he reached the top, the boulder would not rest and it rolled all the way down the mountainside to the bottom. This then was his eternal tormented load to bear, or so it would seem.
Sexual assault victims find expert help and guidance at the Cotterman Center
Oakland Park – There’s a flurry of excitement at the Nancy J. Cotterman Center. No, not the one in downtown Fort Lauderdale, but the brand new building here. A ribbon cutting was conducted at the county’s sexual assault crisis center back in October, and this month staff has been moving in their belongings. Social workers and victims advocates stocked bookshelves with self help books for survivors of all ages and hung motivational sayings from the walls. On Dec. 11, the doors were officially open to the public.
Waking Up: A new year, a new beginning
A new year is quickly upon us. And that means new beginnings. Of course, each new day is a new beginning, as is each new moment. Life is kind of like an hourglass, turned upside down as it is, with sands flowing out unceasingly. Or like a window of opportunity that closes just a little bit each passing second. I don’t say these things to frighten anyone, just to say it like it is. We have a limited time to live our lives so what we do with this fleeting opportunity is entirely up to us.

The Grammy-winning jazz tenor saxophonist would go on to play all over the world such as at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and in Switzerland where he did a double bill with Miles Davis. But even though the Afro-Caribbean and Jazz artist has toured worldwide, he’s never performed at a Pompano Beach festival.

Catching the Ocean View: The new year will bring major upgrades at Mizner Marina
This is the time of year where it’s nice to look to the future of the marine industry to see what the new year will bring. A lot has happened this past year at Mizner Marina, 790 NW 1 Ave. in Deerfield Beach, purchased in April 2022. This was previously known as Freedom Marina. The almost five-acre site was a junkyard of old boats and dilapidated buildings. Some maintenance was being done under the previous owners along with limited boat storage. Some of the existing seawall and finger docks were in need of repair and there was limited boat launching.
