New budgets highlight current issues, future initiatives
Deerfield Beach – Commissioners reviewed the proposed budgets of the city’s largest departments last Wednesday. What drew the most attention was a chart outlining the costs and attendance at special events from July 4th which draws upwards of 80,000 people to the beach for a day of music and fireworks to a fledgling event, Juneteenth, which last year drew only 300 people and cost $65,000 – $216 per person.
Waking Up: The Zen teachings of TV commercials, Part 2
In a previous column, I showed how television commercials suggest how to find happiness and peace of mind. In this column, I’ll show how these same electronic mantras lead you to live your Path, and unfold great career possibilities. Two millennia ago, Patanjali brought kernels of wisdom to the...

“I have found the residents here to be very inclusive, diverse, and friendly”. I was a little confused when I read Mr. Pazos’ letter demeaning our “nasty little hamlet” which is in fact a town though small. He talks about “they” whoever “they” are. I am a permanent resident of our “nasty little hamlet.” Am I one of “they”? Generally speaking, I have found the residents here to be very inclusive, diverse, and friendly. What inclusive has to do with our pier escapes me. If people who live here or visit have a grouse to make they are always welcome to move on. It is a free country and I am sure they will not be missed.

Local author loves “crunching” numbers and producing sports record books
Deerfield Beach – John Mercurio has been keeping statistics ever since he was a high school athlete. At 87, he continues his assault on what he calls “the big lie.”. “The sports world has been lying to us for hundreds of years, saying there was a record book,” Mercurio said. “Back in 1980, I wanted to know who had more records between Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb. So, he went to the library to find the answer. There wasn’t one. “The sports world has been telling us when somebody breaks a record, they are in the record book. I actually thought one existed.”

Pompano Beach – Conrado Flores realizes the importance of getting his kids to become avid readers. For that very reason he took his daughter Julia, 9, and her brother, Isaac, 6, to the Broward County Library’s Summer Learning Program kickoff at the Pompano Beach Library and Cultural Center Saturday, June 10.
The Yard’s last days? Wilton Manors’ popular “urban oasis” seems destined for redevelopment
Wilton Manors – During a visit to The Yard, it doesn’t take long to see its imperfections. Overgrown grass, a cracked walkway, a broken and sagging wooden fence, a roofless building with deteriorating walls. But to many residents and visitors here, The Yard is anything but an eyesore....

Eye on the Arts: “Boil Notice” at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center artfully shines a light on Broward’s drinking water
Some art is intended mainly to enhance our lives through its beautiful or provocative imagery, and that is sufficient. Some art tells a story. And then there’s art that not only tells a story but does so in the interest of public service. Available at the Pompano Beach Cultural...

I just wanted to share a true gem I found which is similar to our own Cap’s Place in Lighthouse Point. Just as quaint and nostalgic is Joanie’s Blue Crab Restaurant on The Tamiami Trail, about an hour and a half from Deerfield Beach. Joanie’s reflects the yesterday’s...

The 3-2 vote to deny came after Commissioner Todd Drosky moved that rezoning be approved. He was supported by Commissioner Bernie Parness.

“Pompano Harness Racing made Pompano Beach into what it is today”. Over 35 years ago, my Grandpa Veral asked my dad, “Hey, do you want to race horses this winter in Pompano Beach?” My dad Ted replied, “I don’t know where that is, but that sounds a lot warmer than Buffalo, New York.” And so that winter, they came here to Pompano for harness horse racing, and loved it. Pompano Park was the place to be, and Pompano being much warmer than Canada was a plus – within a few years, they moved down here permanently. They called Pompano home, the wins started piling in, and “Bowman” became a household name around the track.

HerStory: Schooner SS Copenhagen’s watery end now provides popular artificial reef for divers
The SS Copenhagen, a steel-hulled schooner-rigged steamship constructed in Sunderland, England in 1898 and registered to the Glasgow Shipowners Company, Ltd., was used to transport cargo across the Atlantic. On May 26, 1900, the schooner sank on the Pompano Drop Off on a voyage between Pennsylvania and Cuba. The ship had run into the inner reef of the Pompano Ledge three-quarters of a mile offshore. The crew abandoned the vessel after trying to unload the 5,000 tons of coal which it carried and were unable to free the vessel from the reef.
