Eye on the Arts: Exhibit highlights psychological benefits of art
In the world of healthcare, mental or emotional health often feels like an asterisk. ArtServe has taken a huge step forward with its “Wellness Exhibition: Fostering Mental and Emotional Health – An Artist’s Journey Through Healing.” Some two dozen artists have interpreted that journey in a variety of ways that adds up to a diverse, encompassing, satisfying whole that is on view through June 16.
Waking Up: The Zen teachings of TV commercials, Part I
Multinational advertisers have been giving profound teachings on happiness and peace of mind for so many years. Watch consciously; the message is coming to you less from the marketer and more from the Universe. Advertisers pump hundreds of millions of dollars into commercials to make you buy their wares, but because the Universe has more profound purposes, “Its” creative intelligence often encodes a deeper meaning into ad messages. These become electronic wisdom, 30-second mantras, inspiring a life of peace.

Fishing Report: World class fishing trip this week
Earlier this week we traveled to Venice, Louisiana in search of yellowfin tuna. I have fished out of Venice several times in my life and as an angler it’s definitely a bucket list trip. The ability to catch almost anything in the world is within range. Anglers from all over the world go to Venice to catch redfish, sea trout and lots of other backwater species.

Pompano Beach – Everyone who appeared before Judge Betsy Benson at Pompano Beach Community Court on a recent Thursday was homeless or about to be. The majority received a municipal ordinance violation or petty crime charges, and were given two choices – participate in Community Court and graduate, or do jail time.
Catching the Ocean View: The changing seas of the local dive industry
The only constant in life is change and it seems even more so since the pandemic. The local dive community was hit hard in the beginning of COVID, when almost every industry was shut down. However, as folks adapted, the outdoor recreational community exploded creating many success stories of families exploring together.

Opening date unclear for Presidente in Palm Aire
Pompano Beach – Presidente is remodeling the old Winn-Dixie in the Palm Aire Marketplace plaza, but it’s unclear when it will open for shoppers. A contractor working on the grocery store located at Atlantic and Powerline Road, estimates it could be open in four or five months. It’s unclear, however, if that will turn out to be an accurate prediction. The time it takes companies to build and/or remodel storefronts and other developments is often underestimated, resulting in openings that sometimes occur weeks and months after the initial estimate.
Fishing Report: Taking a Bahamas trip now is a great idea
A large mahi-mahi (pictured above and caught by Sandy Bass) was caught earlier this week off of Elbow Cay in the Bahamas. It’s not often that you see mahi-mahi this size but what is even crazier is that there were several other fish right about the same size caught during the tournament last weekend. A few boats made the trip over from our coast to fish in the Production/Custom billfish tournament put on by Capt. Skip Smith from Lighthouse Point Florida. This was the nicest and most well done tournament that I have ever been a part of.

Eye on the Arts: Curtain Call Playhouse: A love of theater drives this touring company
If you were to go looking for a theater named Curtain Call Playhouse, you’d come up empty. The Pompano Beach-based theater non-profit, which is partially funded by a Broward Cultural Division grant, was once housed at the Emma Lou Olson Center, but scheduling conflicts led founder and artistic director Kris Coffelt to devise a solution that might seem novel but is actually part of a great tradition: the touring theater company.

New law targets antisemitic hate speech and actions
The vote in both houses of the Florida Legislature was unanimous, not an easy feat in these days of hyperpartisanship. The bill, which puts more teeth into targeting acts of antisemitism, was signed by Governor Ron DeSantis while visiting Israel on April 28. The house bill, HB 269, “prohibits people...
