I read Mr. Zachet’s Jan. 26 letter about the Toys For Tots and totally agree. They interfered with my job each time they had that run through my route. It was for the “privileged.” Oh well. Tim Golly, Pompano Beach. “It only takes a moment to brighten...
HerStory: Broward’s long history marked by constant expansion
Broward County was founded in 1915 and named in honor of Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, governor of Florida from 1905 to 1909. Palm Beach and Dade counties gave almost equal shares of land to create the new entity. Today Broward has 31 municipalities and 11.6 miles of unincorporated areas scattered within...
Catching the Ocean View: Bringing life back to an old dog and an older marina
This is a story about survival and bringing life back to an old dog and an even older marina. First the dog part of the story . . . Patrick Showell and his wife Kiersten with their dog Peter took a dinghy ride on the Hillsboro River on Tuesday, Jan. 24. As they approached the western side of the Mizner Marina property in Deerfield Beach, they spotted what appeared to be a dog. Initially, they couldn’t tell if it was dead or alive as he was “pretty hard to see tucked in the rocks and under the bushes,” says Showell.
“Heart Smart” tips for seniors
Dr. Lucinda Demarco, Florida’s UnitedHealthcare chief medical officer says, “February is a good time to get ‘heart smart’ and take steps to reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease. The good news is, seniors across Florida can take a few simple steps to reduce their risk and enjoy better health.” To help, Dr. Demarco suggests four easy tips:
At Home with Gary: Digital curb appeal makes property attractive from the street to the world
A major national magazine recently asked me about the definition and importance of digital curb appeal. My short answer was that it’s the way the overwhelming majority of home buyers start reviewing properties for sale. In fact, my answer understated the impact digital curb appeal has today. Digital marketing in real estate takes first impressions to a higher level (another level), don’t miss this opportunity.
Catching the Ocean View: Wahoo Bay module fabrication has begun; deployment expected to begin next week
Many decades of urban development along our coastline have resulted in homes and commercial buildings directly exposed to the dangers of sea level rise. Waterfront properties have given way to condominiums and concrete seawalls that were once sand, coral rock, and mangroves. “Coastal Communities often depend on natural barriers, like mangroves and coral reefs, to aid in flood reduction during tropical threats like hurricanes,” states the latest information from Wahoo Bay, a project with scientific, educational, and tourism objectives.
Contract awarded for $6 million Ultimate Sports Park; skate park no longer in plans
Pompano Beach – The city commission has set a maximum price of $6,166,555 for DiPompeo Construction Corporation to build the Ultimate Sports Park. The park will be located east of Apollo Park, near the Northwest Branch Library and funded with G.O. Bond money. At last week’s meeting, the commission...
Coral Gardens Park may be renamed; city considers the future of Wilton Drive Improvement District
Wilton Manors – City commissioners held off on voicing their support or opposition to a request to rename Coral Gardens Park last week. The request was made by the Three Bridges Neighborhood Association to honor longtime residents Jack and Pamela Leiber. Leisure Services Director Patrick Cann said the couple is responsible for the planting of the trees in the park on Coral Gardens Drive and their home was also featured in Gold Coast Pictorial magazine in 1975.
Future use of old fire station up for debate
Lighthouse Point – The fate of the city’s old fire station came up for debate last week with commissioners divided as to whether to tear it down or convert it for use by the Building Department. No matter their positions on the 1970s structure which has been plagued...

If you’ve never set foot in Stork’s Bakery & Coffee House in Wilton Manors, you may not realize that in addition to serving up delicious drinks, baked goods, sandwiches, soups, and salads, it offers an array of work by local artists that changes monthly. The curator in charge...
This local centenarian poet writes from his heart
Pompano Beach – If asked to describe 100-year-old resident Bill Gellerman, the first adjectives that come to mind are witty, clever, creative, funny and charming; and – if anything – that’s all an understatement. Gellerman, who turns the ripe young age of 101 on Feb. 23,...
“Now these kids get to read them, too”: Girl Scouts give the gift of reading to less fortunate children
Pompano Beach – Jade Meus understands she’s more fortunate than many other children and she wants to give some of it back. “I own a lot of books and since I’ve already read them, I can give them away . . . these [homeless] kids never had any of that,” said Meus, 13, a resident of Deerfield Beach. “Now these kids get to read them, too.”
Commissioners make progress in the race to get sand on Hillsboro’s beaches
Hillsboro Beach – City commissioners had five options for going forward with a regional agreement that will bring much needed sand to the town’s beaches. After studying the numbers – sand and dollar amounts – they endorsed the path favored by their coastal consultants: to purchase 216,855 cubic yards of sand at a cost of $5.6 million.

“There has to be a better way to raise money for the tots”. The Toys for Tots car rally in December was a good benefit, I’m sure. However, I just happened to be getting gas and suddenly the road closed – and 12 minutes later the first car went by. For the next 11.5 minutes, I filmed and then counted 251 cars in the line. Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys, and a few other stray models. Meanwhile, people trying to get from point A to B had to wait those 24 minutes to cross the street. There has to be a better way to raise money for the tots. The expense of the sheriff department and the multiple officers and vehicles used for this could have been used elsewhere.
