Catching the Ocean View: New Year’s resolutions for the Chiefy Crew
This is the time of year where we reflect on our past 12 months and also look forward to the resolutions of the new year. The common theme for the Chiefy Crew was to have “less stress and dive more,” says Carlos Lluch. A divemaster, Carlos is a recent addition to the crew, whom I met on the dive charter AquaLife at the Hillsboro Inlet.
The Scholarship Plug Corner: ‘Tis the season to apply for scholarships
‘Tis the season when holiday carols remind us, “There’s no place like home for the holidays.” At the same time, we at The Scholarship Plug know many students have a home away from home, be it a college dorm or off campus housing. That’s why we encourage students to consider applying to receive funds to offset housing costs. Promiseland Properties’ “Leading You Home Scholarship” – due Feb. 15, 2023 – is open to any student classified as a high school junior or senior or currently enrolled in a college, university, or technical college.
The reason it’s a season: Nearly 3,000 wreaths laid in honor of veterans buried in Pompano Beach
Pompano Beach – In a time when hyper partisanship often divides red (Republicans) and blue (Democrats), Saturday’s Wreaths Across America ceremonies were a call for a patriotic uniting of both colors. “Notice there’s no red side or blue side (here at the ceremony),” said World War II Navy...
“I want to build the strongest house there ever was”: New house in Pompano made from shipping containers
Pompano Beach – Standing proudly inside the house he built, Jim Wolff feels a bit like a new father. “I’m so proud of it. I feel like I’ve got a new baby.”. The CEO of Ironclad Steel Structures, Inc., Wolff’s house is a prototype for a new type of home.
“My Christmas letter to Santa”
I’ve been a very good fellow today. There’s not many presents I’m asking of you. They won’t fill your sleigh, I need only a few. A stocking of kindness to share everywhere. A bit of compassion, to show how I care. A touch of forgiveness when...

Her tragedy inspired a plan for compassionate actions in the workplace
Pompano Beach – When Mindy Corporon’s father and son were murdered in a mass shooting in 2014 at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, her world stopped. But, bills still had to be paid, meetings still needed to be attended, and her other child still needed her. At the time, Corporon was the co-founder and CEO of a wealth management firm and she says the fog didn’t lift for another 18 months.
Electric vehicle road trips no longer a future fantasy
There is no doubting the rising popularity of electric vehicles. Rising fuel prices and a desire by some consumers to lessen their environmental impact, coupled with improving technology and efficiency has been motivating more and more Americans to swap the pump for the plug in recent years. With holiday travel...

Eye on the Arts: Broward Cultural Division helps make the county a cultural destination
In the two years I’ve been writing this column, many of the visual and performing artists and organizations I’ve written about have depended to varying extents on the resources of the Broward Cultural Division (BCD). So, I thought that readers should become familiar with this essential agency. Its...
BSO doggie shelter aims to find homes for lost canines
Deerfield Beach – We’re making no bones about it: This is a feel-good story for the holidays. A shed at the Broward Sheriff’s (BSO) District 10 station here has been converted into a kennel for strayed or neglected dogs. And in keeping with the season, the men and women who work there have festooned it with tinsel and holly. Students from Heritage Academy in Plantation decorated a Christmas tree with pet-friendly ornaments and seasonal sayings with canine messages hung nearby.

Pompano Beach – During a three-hour nail biter (the final reading on a proposed luxury/affordable housing in an industrial district) commissioners came very close to overturning the support they gave at the Nov. 8 first reading. Nothing changed Dec. 13 on the comprehensive land map amendment for the 7-acre...
Fishing Report: Wahoo are dominating the headlines once again
Pictured here on top is the crew aboard “Queen of the South” last weekend at the Slicker Wahoo Tournament in Bimini. We placed third out of 29 boats which was a great showing. The day prior to the tournament we landed a 56-pounder, which would have been good enough for the biggest fish win on Saturday. “Ditch Digger,” “Dirty Money,” “Hoos Your Daddy,” and “Sandbob” put up money-winning catches of wahoo as well.
