Tara’s Trustworthy Tips: Power of attorney has no power after death
“I am my spouse’s power of attorney; they recently died, and the bank won’t let me talk with them, why?”. Let’s be honest here, estate planning documents can be very confusing. There are documents that only work while you are living and documents that strictly come into play when you are deceased. A Last Will and Testament are legal directions for after you have left this Earth (meaning you died – not gone to space). A trust is sort of the best of both worlds – it can work upon your incapacity and death.

Eye on the Arts: Nature photographer’s exhibit captures the spirit of this place beyond the lens
At around 13, Phoenix felt a connection to nature. She was a Girl Scout who went camping in the Everglades, and that summer her parents took her to California’s Yosemite National Park. That’s where the seeds of her becoming a nature photographer were first planted and she’d find her lifelong focus.
Viewpoints – Week of March 28
I am a student at Florida Atlantic University’s School of Social Work. I am writing today because I recently read an article that was published by The New Pelican titled, “Riled up by social media? These communicators say learn the facts” by Judy Wilson. I thought this was a great way to show the community how social media can negatively impact something whether it is small or big. Social media is a massive thing in our society these days and, as time goes on, we do see a lot of inaccurate posts or spreading of misinformation.
CRA approves bee mural for Old Town
Pompano Beach – The bees won a month-long public battle March 19, the first official day of spring. After listening to 14 speakers, most of them artists, comment on the merits of a public art mural to promote walkability between the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, Bailey Contemporary Arts (BaCA), and Ali Cultural Arts Center, the city commission, acting as the Community Redevelopment Agency Board (CRA), approved one bee mural, albeit some of them reluctantly.

Catching the Ocean View: “We need more Chiefy!”
When Bruce Copping of Pompano Beach wrote on Feb. 15 in our Viewpoints & More section that he couldn’t find my column in the latest edition of The New Pelican, little did he know I needed to take a short break from above and below the ocean. His comment of “We need more Chiefy!” set the tone for my well being and on my road to recovery.

Inside the gymnasium at Pompano Beach High School on March 16, more than 1,600 girls from athletics programs across the county sang and danced along to the DJ. Cardi B, Beyonce, Silento, Glorilla – they knew every word and dance, the perfect kickoff to the inaugural Play Like a GIRL event.
Waking Up: Actors and the infinite field of creativity within
At the Academy Awards, Hollywood royalty treated each other like Olympian gods and goddesses. Stars, after all, are lights in the heavens, so Olympian references seem apt. We lionize actors because they serve us in powerful ways. Their art lifts spirits, opens minds, and warms hearts. More subtly, they sometimes portray heroes living a life of full potential. As actors, they put egos aside so their characters can take over. We delight in watching this channeling because we yearn to find that center in ourselves which can open vast creativity.
At 96, Palm Aire golfer Janet Arnold is still hitting the links
Pompano Beach – Janet Arnold doesn’t see herself giving up golf anytime soon. “I thought about it last summer, but my family talked me into continuing to play,” said the 96-year-old Palm Aire resident, who plays with a couple of dozen ladies in the Palm Aire Ladies Golf Association.

Catch of the Week: A double header of wahoo saves the day
Pictured here is Bill Zito (left), general manager of the Florida Panthers with a few other hockey elites posing with a few nice wahoo from our charter the other day. We were extremely lucky to catch these fish as they were both caught on monofilament leaders. Wahoo have super sharp teeth and catching one on mono is lucky but catching two is crazy!
School district considers closing schools
Oakland Park – Pamela Jenkins’ children graduated from the public school system years ago, but she still wants this city’s schools to remain open. “They’re still taking my taxpayer money, so might as well keep the schools open,” said Jenkins, referring to the possibility that Broward County Schools might close some schools because of a district wide under enrollment of 50,000 students.
Developer uses sheep to maintain property before construction
Pompano Beach – The redevelopment of 10 empty acres of former Westview Community Cemetery land has yet to occur, but a group of employees is already hard at work. Jake Zebede, principal with KZ Capital, the firm that bought the land, is using sheep to maintain the landscaping until construction begins. According to Zebede’s March 12 post on LinkedIn, it’s just one of several ventures he’s involved in, including collaborating with his long-time friend and New York Times bestselling author Rabbi Joseph Telushkin on a book about Jewish principles of success.
