NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones and Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew held a press conference Wednesday morning to discuss gun violence statistics in the city.

According to the data discussed during the conference, there has been a 55% decrease in homicides compared to July of 2023. Jones has previously committed to reducing homicides caused by gun violence in Newport News by 15% over an 18-month period during his State of the City address in March.

“I am encouraged by the results to date as we continue to implement innovative programs and strategies to address gun violence in our city,” Jones said. “My ask of our community is for you to continue to build forward with me by strengthening our community partnerships, uplifting our youth and young adults together, and supporting the important work of our dedicated workers.”

The data also showed a 31% decrease overall in shootings within the city.

“I want to thank the men and women of our department for their hard work and dedication,” Chief Drew said. “Their effort along with our community partners have been instrumental in our achievements and reductions. In addition, I want to recognize the citizens of Newport News for their trust and support.”

Chief Drew also discussed the city’s clearance rates determined by the FBI, saying that the Newport News Police Department have solved 88.9% of their cases so far.

Newport News officials cited the police department’s focus on gun violence reduction strategies, such as Operation Blue Line, Operation Cease Fire and community partnerships, as playing a large role in the city’s success.
