NEWPORT — Tennova Newport Medical Center (NMC) has added a neurologist, Annette Goodman, D.O., to its staff. According to NMC CEO Scott Williams, the hospital had not had a neurologist on staff for more than a year.

Dr. Goodman is a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but had most recently practiced in the Ft. Myers, Florida, area.

Goodman attended Penn State and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency in Detroit, Michigan.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Newport, Goodman said that stroke is a treatable condition. She explained that if a patient seeks treatment within four-and-a-half hours, a stroke can be effectively treated using medication. If treated within 24 hours, there can be surgical removal of the blood clot that has caused the stroke.

“Unfortunately, people suffering a stroke delay seeking medical treatment and try to just sleep it off,” Goodman said. “It is imperative to seek treatment right away if you are experiencing any stroke symptoms.”

As a neurologist, Goodman treats a variety of conditions, including Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, epilepsy, migraines, Myasthenia gravis, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Responding to a question, she explained dementia cannot be reversed, but there are medications that can help slow the disease. She said brain exercises, such as puzzles and games, can help stimulate the brain and are good for dementia patients.

The neurologist also discussed different kinds of medical tests, such as the electroencephalogram (EEG), which measures electrical activity of the brain, and electromyography (EMG), which measures electrical activity of the muscles and the nerve cells that control them.

In her free time, Dr. Goodman enjoys raising and training dogs, hunting, camping, four-wheeling and other outdoor activities.

Dr. Goodman’s office is located in the medical building at the hospital at 434 Fourth Street in Newport. Her office can be reached at (423) 613-6379.
