There were several tree-related power outages over the past weekend that required Newport Utilities to make emergency repairs.

NU reports the outages were caused by falling debris landing on numerous power lines during the storms that came through the area. Its crews responded throughout the evening on Saturday, July 20 to restore power.

One of the larger outages that occurred late Saturday night was the result of a tree falling on a 69kv transmission line that NU said feeds both its West and Chestnut Hill substations. The were well over 1,000 outages that resulted from that incident.

NU stated that in order to assure the safety of its tree trimming effort that it is currently conducting, it was forced to cut power to clear the tree and then restored power as quickly as possible once the tree was removed.

NU had power restored by early morning hours on Sunday, July 21.
