Ten residents were displaced and two were treated for smoke inhalation after a house fire in Hawthorne caused a partial roof collapse Monday night, according to fire crews.

The fire happened at a house on Cedar Place around 10:30 p.m., at a narrow dead-end street. A mother and daughter were treated for smoke inhalation, but are doing OK, according to Fire Chief Joe Speranza. All residents managed to evacuate.

According to the Hawthorne Fire Department, crews were evacuated from the building briefly during the operation after multiple collapses occurred in the back of the home. They say crews were able to reenter a few minutes later.

Fire officials say additional assistance was requested from nearby fire departments. They say the fire was on the first floor in the back, it extended to the second floor and then shot through the attic.

Fire officials say crews were able to bring the fire under control in just under an hour but remained on scene for four hours.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
