Seniors at Shoreham-Wading River High School are studying bees.

There’s now an apiary - a place where bees are kept - on school grounds.

“As we always say, one bee at a time,” says science teacher Kevin Nohejl.

Nohejl says they are trying to bring the population back in light of the many struggles bees are facing.

Students in Nohejl’s Long Island sustainability class learned how to build hives and handle and care for the bees.

Nohejl says the bee population will continue to grow and is expected to peak around July 4, at which time, each colony will have around 50,000 - 60,000 bees.

Senior Kieran Clifford told News 12 that this is the “best class” he’s taken in high school.

Student Gavin McQueeney said working with his classmates to make it all happen has been one of his “favorite parts” of the entire experience.
