New York City lawmakers have passed a new bill to keep trash from piling up on the sidewalk or in front of businesses.

The law will give the Department of Sanitation the authority to fine repeat violators of rules regulating the cleanliness of public space outside commercial properties. It's in effect for all five boroughs in the city.

Fines have also increased with the first time offense billing set at $50, the second offense at $300 and a $500 fine if the littering continues within a 12-month period.
