It was a bittersweet morning at Yonkers City Hall as local and regional officials gathered with veterans and their loved ones to remember not only the countless Yonkers veterans who are not here today, but also all veterans throughout the nation who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

During the ceremony, Mayor Mike Spano announced that the City of Yonkers has been designated as a World War II American Heritage City—the only city in New York State to receive this honor. The designation recognizes the city’s significant contributions to the war effort during World War II, as well as its commitment to preserving the history of this pivotal period in American history.

Guest speaker and Yonkers native Sgt. Sam Martinez emphasized the community spirit that binds the city's residents together.

“We are surrounded by the echoes of sacrifice. We remember the brave men and women who have fought for our freedoms, having endured hardships unimaginable, and who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Sgt. Sam Martinez, U.S. Army Recruiting Station.
