Weather delayed the annual National Night Out events for police forces across New Jersey. But the crowd in Bound Brook came out strong for the rain date on Wednesday. Police sergeants, local coaches and even the mayor all had their turn in the dunk tank. There were also vendors, tons of snacks, games and most importantly, a chance for police and the community they serve to meet in a setting outside of a classroom or emergency. “It's the kids,” said Bound Brook Sgt. Rob Pikulin. “It's getting them up here. It's the fist bumps. It's giving out all the little giveaways that we have for them. Putting that face and that name together, really, so they can be with us, smile with us and just have a relaxed time where they might not necessarily get to hang out with us.” “I hope that we continue to bring the community together,” said Officer Tamina Hutchins. “It starts from our youth. Listen, we'll build them up.” National Night Out began 40 years ago in Pennsylvania. The event is particularly popular in New Jersey. The organization’s website says it’s the state with the fourth-most participating police forces behind only Texas, California and Pennsylvania.
