New York City Housing Authority residents at the Coney Island Houses voted Friday to keep Section 9 housing. Out of the 415 residents, 241 voted to remain in Section 9 housing, according to NYCHA. The other two options were the Public Housing Preservation Trust, third-party funding for repairs and the PACT program - federal funding for repairs. A statement from NYCHA said in part, “We appreciate residents taking an active role in the voting process and remain dedicated to working alongside them to improve the quality of their lives through the paths they’ve selected.” Some residents told News 12 they are not entirely happy with the decision. “Between the garbage, so many bugs, the mold ... it’s disgusting. It’s not a way to live," said Angelina Lawrence, one of the residents. "I have a gorgeous apartment, so they feel like because we live in public housing, we have to live like our environment, and I don’t allow that.” Residents added they will continue to reach out to NYCHA for repairs to be made in apartments.
