It was Aug. 26, 1933, that Captain Al Kahn caught a 20-foot-wide manta ray off the coast of Deal. He says that it got caught in his anchor line. Kahn said that he and his friends fired 22 shots at it from a rifle to kill it and then brought it to the docks in Brielle. It is estimated that the manta ray weighed 5,000 pounds.
