Parents in the Bronx are expressing excitement over discounts their kids will receive on the NYC Ferry as they head back to school. Starting Sept. 1, high school students in New York City can take advantage of
discounted fares . Yuneiry Contreras, a parent to a high schooler says this is a big savings for families. “I feel that is a big opportunity for students. There are many people who sometimes do not have the resources to pay and this will help with that,” Contreras said. According to the city's discounted fare program, students who enroll in the city's Ferry Student Discount Program will pay $1.35 per ride – that's $3 less than the regular fare. Alia Noor, a high schooler, tells News 12 she will use the ferry as an alternative to the train with this discount. “The view is absolutely gorgeous and it's just free air.Like as we saw, you can sit at the top. It's just a breeze. It's peaceful too,” said Noor. The New York City Economic Development Corporation recently announced that reduced fares will increase by 10 cents to $1.45 on Sept. 9. Eligible parents or guardians must create a "NYC Student Account" in order to qualify for the discount. Students can then purchase discounted tickets through the NYC Ferry app. They can also buy a paper ticket at the Wall Street/Pier 11 ticketing window. Students must re-enroll in the program each year. Applications are now open. For more information, visit:
