Ryan O’Shea would go the extra mile for anybody, his dad said. He was the captain of his basketball team, popular and said to be a loving young man. He was also a young man who was privately struggling. Ryan committed suicide more than five years ago at the Long Island Rail Road station in Rockville Centre. His family is hoping large, new signage, soon to be put up at the station, will prevent suicides. The signs will be 4x4 feet, reading “Your pain is real, but so is hope. Call or text 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. We’re here. We care. We’ll listen.” The signs will be placed at the top and bottom of stairs, and at the ends of the platform on the ground near benches. Assemblyman Brian Curran stressed that when someone goes to a train platform and is contemplating ending their life, they are not looking up and they're not looking at the wall. They are looking down. Because of this, the signs will be strategically placed on the ground. The MTA said the signs will be installed soon. There are currently signs up, but they are not placed on the ground and they're smaller than the new signs. "
