The family of a man who was fatally struck while riding a scooter in Elizabeth is calling for justice in his death. Relatives of José Germán-Muñoz returned to Fairmount Avenue Saturday where their son, brother and cousin died earlier this week. “I was sleeping, and my mom called to tell me that my brother was involved in an accident,” recalled Lenny Germán through a Spanish translator. They remembered Germán-Muñoz as someone who prioritized time with his family, including his two sons, and enjoyed soccer. “He was a wonderful person,” Germán said. “He was a wonderful brother. His mother is devastated. His family is devastated right now. We only want justice.” Germán-Muñoz was struck and killed while attempting to cross Route 1 & 9 in Elizabeth on a gas-powered scooter early Labor Day morning. The family has hired an investigator, who shared exclusive eyewitness video. It shows Germán-Muñoz riding down Fairmount Avenue with a green light. The car approaches from Spring Street, and, despite what appears to be a red light, does not slow down. The Germán family says José had the scooter for about a year, and mainly used it to go to work and visit family. “He used to do it only over here in Elizabeth,” Germán said. “I always used to tell him, ‘Take care of yourself when you’re driving.’” According to police, this is the fourth pedestrian death since Aug. 11 that took place along Route 1 & 9. Police said the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating in their investigation. "
