Three weeks after a massive flooding event, the Southbury Public Library remains closed indefinitely. “We are still struggling," said First Selectman Jeffrey Manville. Manville says the lower level of the library is destroyed. Two furnaces need to be replaced, and both the electrical and air systems have to be moved. “The library is an important part of our community, it always has been,” Manville said. “I’ve often called it the crown jewel of the town of Southbury." The 10,000-square-foot basement also acts as a cultural and arts center while housing supplies for the food bank and the town’s emergency management services. “Hopefully, FEMA and the different government agencies involved will come up with something where we can draw on funds as we go forward,” Manville says. “If you’re looking at $100 million, that’s a lot of money to lay out and hope you get reimbursed.” The town has no timetable on when the library will reopen.
