On the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, many are visiting The Rising at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. The Rising is the county’s memorial to the 123 people from Westchester who were killed in the attacks. The site and structure were chosen by the victim’s family members and was officially dedicated in 2006 on the 5th anniversary of 9/11. Sadly, in 2021, a new memorial was added, dedicated to all the Westchester first responders who've died from 9/11 related illnesses. This year eight names have been added bringing the total to 81. Throughout the day, people stop by the memorial to say a prayer or leave flowers and notes for a friend or loved one who was lost. "They will never be forgotten, that day, them, their families, what they went through, it's our pain too," says a tearful Silvia Clarco of Valhalla. Each year, the county holds a memorial service at The Rising for the victim's family members that is also open to the public. Westchester County executive George Latimer says, "The civilians who died, the first responders who died, they died in an instant, and if we fail to remember them, then we're not doing our duty as Americans."
