ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Athletes with disabilities were highlighted Wednesday at the University of Rochester, as one group held a wheelchair basketball exhibition to benefit a local adaptive sports team.

The U of R Varsity Student Athlete Advisory Committee hosted the event, which included live student performances, a raffle, and of course, wheelchair basketball.

The Varsity Yellowjacket teams faced off against the Division three NWBA Rochester Wheels team. The money raised supports the Rochester Wheels team.

“I’m super passionate about adaptive sports in general,” said VSAAC President Hunter Gilbreath. “We’ve done a lot of work in the fall with the challenger’s organization. And I think our school is kind of getting into sports and supporting the teams as they go further into their postseasons. So I just think something like this get’s the excitement about sports in general and it just gets us involved in our community which is super duper important.”

The event has been going strong for over a decade, despite some slowing around the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
