ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A new mural at Rochester City School District Number 19 was revealed on Saturday.

Thanks to an arts program in 2023, the City of Rochester awarded up to $80k for the creation of murals in city neighborhoods. Four Mural sites around the City were dedicated and the artists were introduced on Saturday.

The work at School No. 19 was painted by Hugo Medina. The mural is said to be based on the work of Erica Bryant, a former journalist who now works at the Vera Institute of Justice.

Bryant spoke about the concept for the mural, “So the collage depicts Anna Marie Douglas who was an important conductor on the underground railroad. And she was known for when people would be coming up to Rochester, escaping slavery, She was known for getting up at any hour of the to give them food. The name of the collage is ‘No Unusual Occurrence’. I just thought that was kind of a secret image that I wanted to try to depict in the now to see larger than life.”
