ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — April has been declared Native Plant Month in the City of Rochester. City leaders and members of the Rochester Garden Club planted a sugar maple tree at the First Street Park Wednesday to mark the occasion.

The inaugural event was designed to raise awareness of the importance of native plants by supporting the diversity of flora and fauna in our region and promoting a healthy ecosystem overall.

“We think about climate change and we think about biodiversity collapse but there is hope,” said Rochester Garden Club Conservation Chair Pamela O’Connor-Chapman. “If the best tool we have in our toolbox is a native plant to fight this biodiversity collapse. so every time we plant a tree every opportunity we have it is so important for not just the environment but each of us as individuals.”

Folks are also encouraged to read the current Urban Forest Master Plan .
