PENFIELD, N.Y. (WROC) — Trailing 8-3 late in the second quarter to Fairport, Penfield girls lacrosse flipped a switch.

The Patriots went on an 8-0 run as Penfield took down Fairport 11-9.

The surge started with just 27 seconds left in the second quarter and ended with 3:24 remaining in the fourth when the Red Raiders finally stopped the bleeding. But it was too little too late.

Karis Hand made nine saves in net for the Patriots to lead the defensive charge. Avery Fordham led the team with three ground balls and Emma Alexander and Emersyn Mathis each forced a turnover.

Whitney Reynolds and Jenna Capozzi led the way on offense, scoring three goals each. Alexander, Fordham, Mathis, Olivia Lanning, and Reegan Sercu all tallied a goal. Mathis also had three assists.

Ella Peers led Fairport with three goals while Camryn DuBose, Brenna Goss, and Katie Mallaber each scored two goals.

Penfield entered the game 11th in the state rankings while Fairport was 5th. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Red Raiders.

The matchup pitted Penfield head coach Dave York against his wife, Fairport head coach Mara Karpp. It was the pair’s first battle as husband and wife. Karpp’s teams had taken down York’s three times previously in their relationship.

Penfield (7-4) will travel to Hilton on Friday, May 3rd while Fairport (9-3) will host undefeated Canandaigua on the same evening.
