ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester’s iconic bridge is getting a paint job!

According to Governor Kathy Hochul, the Frederick Douglass-Susan B. Anthony Memorial Bridge over the Genesee River will be on the receiving end of a $5.3 million preventative maintenance painting project. The color of the bridge will remain the same.

The current paint on the bridge will be removed and reapplied with paints that are resistant against the elements. The zinc-based and epoxy-based paint will protect the steel of the bridge from corrosion.

This will be the first preventative maintenance project happening on the bridge ever since it opened in 2007. Hochul says the bridge has been an iconic part of the Rochester skyline since it opened.

“This work will not only ensure that residents and visitors can continue to appreciate this bridge for decades to come, but continue to uphold the proud Rochester legacy of both Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony,” said Governor Hochul.

Traffic on I-490 heading over the bridge will remain open. Work will be done at night to avoid disrupting traffic. Drivers can expect to see temporary ramp closures and detours over the course of this project.
