ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — RTS is replacing and upgrading some of the damaged shelters along its busiest routes.

There are about 1,900 bus stops throughout Monroe County, but not all of them have these shelters. They provide coverage from inclement weather, and benches for riders to use while they wait for their bus.

Officials say they cost about $13,000 each to buy and install.

“These bus shelters do have what we call a useful life, which is about 10 to 15 years, that we hope to have them out,” RTS public information officer Tom Brede said. “What happens after a long period of time is replacement parts are hard to find, sometimes they become impossible to find and sometimes they become damaged and it leads us to having to replace them.”

RTS is currently replacing 14 shelters, with another 12 to follow. The bus stops will continue to operate as normal even as the renovations are taking place.
