    Athena baseball, Schroeder softball reach sectional finals

    Baseball

    Class AA Semifinals: (3) Greece Athena 8, (10) Irondequoit 3

    The Trojans scored early and often, taking down Irondequoit to reach the Class AA finals.

    Sammy Saucke went 3/3 with 3 RBIs while Connor Osier had a triple and 2 RBIs for Athena.

    Derrick Allen struck out nine batters on the mound, allowing 2 earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. He also had an RBI double and scored a run at the plate.

    Parker Goodness and Jacob Sova also tallied RBIs for Athena.

    Irondequoit’s day was highlighted by a pair of home runs by Jack Bayerl and Colby Mroczek in the fifth inning. The Eagles turned a 5-0 deficit into a 5-2 game, but gave up three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

    Athena (17-6) will face Victor in the championship game. The Blue Devils beat Hilton 13-12 on a walk-off double by Jon Swartz. The title game will be on Saturday, May 25th at Innovative Field at 1:00 p.m.

    Irondequoit’s season ends with an 11-12 record.

    Softball

    Class AA Semifinals: (1) Webster Schroeder 1, (4) Victor 0

    Liana DeValder threw a complete game, one-hit shutout for the Warriors to power her team to the sectional title game for the third time in the last four years.

    DeValder tallied 11 strikeouts in the game, fooling Blue Devil batters all night long.

    Leah Murray had an RBI double in the first inning, scoring Elizabeth Baglieri for the game’s lone run.

    Olivia Steinorth had seven strikeouts for Victor, allowing just one earned run and three hits.

    Schroeder (20-2) will face Thomas in the championship game on Saturday, May 25th at Finger Lakes Community College at 3:00 p.m.

    Schroeder beat Thomas 3-1 on May 1st in the regular season. The Warriors also beat the Titans 6-2 in the 2022 Section V Class A1 title game.

    Victor’s season ends with a 15-7 record.
