ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The East Rochester Police Department warned residents of a new phone scam going around Thursday afternoon.

According to police, the scammers are using the department’s number (585-586-4399) to call people in the area and beyond, falsely claiming to be an official with the department. The caller ID might appear on the victim’s phone as “Public Safety.”

Once in contact, the scammers will then tell the victim they are facing sex trafficking charges in an effort to convince them to pay to have those charges cleared from their record, police said.

East Rochester police emphasized that the department would never request money over the phone. Anyone who does receive a call like this is asked to report the call to police immediately.
