ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Gates Fire District wants students to review their campus and dorm fire escape plans before the upcoming semester begins.

Firefighters said cooking can be a risk, and advised making sure to never leave food unattended while using a stove or microwave.

Items such as candles and cigarettes are usually prohibited in dorms.

“Usually the first few weeks are the toughest because most kids, it’s a new thing for them, their first time living on their own, might be their first time cooking on their own without parental supervision so we want to make sure you get that knowledge before you head to school,” Gates FD Community Risk Reduction Specialist Kalliopi Lang said.

The Gates Fire District also wants students to make sure their building has smoke alarms, and to always know two ways out of a building in case of a fire.
