New York State Fair using reverse ATMs

GEDDES, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — We’ve got an important reminder for fairgoers…it’s cashless. That includes parking.

“We have our reverse ATMS here at the main gate. We have two of them. What people can do is with the minimum of $10 cash, they can put their money in,” said Julie LaFave, New York State Fair Director.

In return, you’ll get a pre-paid Visa card. It can be used to buy tickets and even parking. The cards can also be used outside of the fair. It’s all part of the fair being cashless. But not everyone is in favor.

“I’m older and I’ve always used cash. I believe in cash. It doesn’t get compromised. You’re good,” said Adrian Hines, fairgoer.

“So many things have changed. I am from the generation where you use cash. Everybody uses credit cards now. I still use cash. Even though I have a credit card,” said Patricia Ferrara, fairgoer.

The Fair’s director says this makes the process easier, and more accessible. But others would disagree.

“That sounds like a lot, honestly. But, I mean if you had to do it, I guess, it’s the fair, you have time, so sure,” said Kelly Sgroi, fairgoer.

But despite the Fair going cashless. Some vendors are only accepting money, like Tully’s.

“It’s my tradition to come in the gates and come right to Tully’s and have a beer, so I appreciate that Tully’s is cash only, I guess,” said Jordan Sgroi, fairgoer.

“Some of my favorite staple things like Pizza Fritte and I know some places do still offer cash for water and stuff. So I like to have at least maybe 30, 40 in cash just in case I need it,” said Cole Hines, fairgoer.

So, make sure you bring both your card and a few extra bucks.
