ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Ontario County residents are again warned of a recent phone scam regarding jury duty.

Authorities say scammers are posing as the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and telling residents that they have missed jury duty or a court appearance. They would then threaten a warrant if they didn’t pay a “fine” costing thousands of dollars.

These payments, according to deputies, involve the scammers convincing residents to use a form of payment from Dollar General.

Deputies assured residents that they would not ask for payment over the phone and not to give sensitive information. If you encounter a scam such as this, you are urged to call the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office at (585)-394-4560.
