ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Governor Hochul has issued a statement regarding the death of a man killed in a stolen car crash in Brighton.

92-year-old Thomas Chase was killed when a stolen car driven by a teenager crashed into his vehicle in Brighton during a police chase. Everyone inside the stolen car — the 17-year-old driver, an 18-year-old passenger, and a 19-year-old passenger — were injured.

The topic of bail reform has become a bigger debate as charges are pending in this case. It was revealed that the 17-year-old driver was arrested 12 times last year. A few weeks before this recent crash, he was arrested for stealing a car in Erie County. He was also on parole for burglary.

A spokesperson for Hochul said their hearts are with Chase’s loved ones, adding Hochul’s plans involving car thefts and cracking down on bail reform:

“Our hearts are with the loved ones of Thomas Chase as they mourn this tragic loss. Governor Hochul’s top priority is to keep New Yorkers safe, which is why she has worked with the Legislature to deliver record funding to combat gun crimes and car thefts, crack down on repeat offenders, and further expand the types of cases where judges have the discretion to set bail. Our administration will continue working with law enforcement and local officials to improve the criminal justice system, combat violence, and strengthen public safety across New York.”

Experts have said the New York State Parole Department could have sought a petition and warrant immediately, while the former Erie County DA says the suspect was in the Raise the Age system. They said this may lead to changes in juvenile justice.
