ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Let’s take a trip out to Seneca Lake in this edition of Generation ROC — and celebrate a local scouting project that proves anyone can reach the same heights with the right opportunities!

Soaring on the light breeze at Seneca Lake Camp in Romulus are frisbees across the new disc golf course!

“It’s a place that I’ve been to a lot, and I’ve had many great memories with, and holds a special place in my heart,” said Canandaigua graduate Taryn Bjorling.

Taryn created the course as part of her service project with Scouting America — formerly known as the Boy Scouts. She joined not long after the scouts started accepting girls in 2019. She was excited to show what girls can do!

“Just knowing that you can do the same things that the boys are doing. Like I always thought of like my brothers and ‘oh I would never be doing something like that’ — especially when I was little and it wasn’t open to girls,” she said. “The amount of stuff that I’ve learned is really amazing to think about and it’s helped me in so many ways.”

With the beautiful lake view as motivation and with the help of family, friends, and volunteers, Taryn got the course set up as a perfect opportunity for campers to try out the sport.

“I love ultimate frisbee —that’s one thing that I like a lot — which also gave me some interest in disc golf in general,” Taryn said. “Just having the opportunity to help share something that could be really great, life-long hobby or leisure activity with someone that they can maybe find interest in it or not know what it is before and be like, hey this is kind of cool.”
