SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) — We knew Fran Brown could recruit. It’s becoming more and more evident that he can coach as well. It took SU’s first-year head coach all of two games to earn his first win over a ranked opponent as Syracuse held on to beat #23 Georgia Tech 31-28 inside the Dome Saturday afternoon.

The Orange led 31-14 midway through the fourth quarter before Georgia Tech rallied scoring two touchdowns in less than three minutes to pull within a field goal. Syracuse was able to run out the clock though, and in doing so, the program picked up its first win over a ranked opponent since beating NC State inside the Dome on October 15th, 2022.

Kyle McCord continues to shine at quarterback. The transfer from Ohio State completed 32 of his 46 pass attempts for 381 yards and four touchdowns.

Trebor Pena was once again McCord’s go-to guy in the first half. Pena caught a pair of touchdown passes in the first half and finished the game with 88 receiving yards on six receptions. Pena now has five total touchdowns through the first two games. Oronde Gadsden also caught a pair of touchdown passes and finished with 93 yards receiving on six catches.

The Orange racked up 517 yards of total offense compared to 378 for the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech was held to 112 rushing yards in the game, which is about half their season average.

‘Cuse will now enjoy an early bye week before returning to action on Friday, September 20th.
