ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Canandaigua Police Department arrested two people for an August 29 dog attack which investigators said left a man and child with severe injuries .

Casey Murphy, 27, and Madison Herendeen, 26, were charged with two counts of third degree assault and one count of reckless endangerment for allegedly allowing a dog to run free, knowing the dog has a history of biting people.

Police said a 43-year-old Rochester man and his 10-year-old son were walking on South Main Street in Canandaigua on August 29 when a pit bull ran up from behind them and attacked the boy. When the father tried to stop the dog, it attacked him.

News 8 spoke to a bystander who helped pry the dog off the boy.

Murphy and Herendeen were processed and released on appearance tickets. As of Monday, the dog was in the custody of the Ontario County Humane Society.
