Section Five on Monday night featured something that’s pretty rare: a game where both teams are defending state champs.

Fairport held off Schroeder to win an epic five-set match worthy of the hardware both squads earned last year.

The Red Raiders ran off four straight points to take control of the fifth set at 10-6 and wore Schroeder down from there. Sidney Reed buried an overpass for the game winner.

Fairport was dominant in the first set and won easily 25-17. Schroeder scored the first seven points of the second set and evened the match with a 25-20 win.

The third set was controlled by the Red Raiders from the start, but the Warriors came back to get even at 22-all. Fairport won the final three points with the set winner coming on a block by Avery Harris.

Schroeder pulled away midway through the fourth set to take a 20-12 lead and won on a ridiculously well placed long distance free ball from Maddie Siphakongviseth. The final was 25-18.

The final set was dead even for the first 12 points before Fairport pulled away. Delaney Yusko had a pair of kills for Fairport in the final set, who played without star senior Kiera Coleman. She was in a boot nursing an ankle injury.

Schroeder was led by strong games from hitters Julianna Frumusa, Maddy Brown and Adrianna Fitzharris.

Fairport improves to 2-0 on the season. Schroeder fell to 0-2.
