ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Seneca Park Zoo is welcoming a new red panda cub named Asha from Binghamton Zoo!

Similar to the zoo’s own cub Teddy Graham, Asha was abandoned by her mother and was being hand-raised at Binghamton Zoo.

The AZA red Panda and Species Survival Plan recommended the transfer so that Teddy would have a cub to socialize with, Seneca Park Zoo announced in a Facebook post.

According to Seneca Park Zoo, this is a common practice with single red panda cubs that are hand-raised.

The cubs will have an outdoor area in the zoo when they start weaning but will not be introduced to the Zoo’s two red pandas Willie and Raji due to the upcoming mating season.

The two cubs will not be kept in a habitat visible to guests, but you can view them through the ‘cub cam’ in the animal hospital during normal zoo hours. Seneca Park Zoo is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Teddy and Asha will move to other zoos when they are 8 to 10-months-oldm which is when red panda cubs would start to separate from their mothers.
