ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Brockport community came together once again 22 years after the attacks on September 11, 2001.

The Brockport Fire District hosted its 9/11 opening ceremony Wednesday morning at the Firefighters Memorial Monument. First responders and members of the US Military were in attendance for the ceremony.

The Brockport ROTC retired the flag hanging at the monument. The opening prayer was done by Michael Barbato, a veteran and the executive director of Coffee for Cops. A uniformed honor guard will be in place until the end of the ceremony.

In tradition for a death on the line of duty for firefighters, the Memorial Bell rang at 8:46 a.m. — the time the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center that morning.

The closing ceremony will start at 6:30 p.m. Additionally, a closed day-long vigil will be held — as it has been for the past 22 years with the playing of TAPS.

The Brockport Fire District is encouraging residents to visit the memorial, take a tag of a firefighter at the fire district, and visit the 9/11 Remembrance Trailer.
