ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — One of Rochester’s recent construction projects is being highlighted on the national level.

The West River Wall improvement project has been named the Public Works Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association.

The project spans nearly four acres of riverfront along the Genesee in the Corn Hill neighborhood. That includes renovating lawn areas, trails and the public plaza.
An ADA accessible boat launch was also installed.

“This was a project that literally could have just been flood wall restoration and that would have been more than enough,” Rochester Commissioner of Environmental Services Richard Perrin said. “Instead we took this opportunity to take almost 2,200 linear feet and create an urban park that connects us to the river, while honoring some of the most important elements of history that ever happened in Rochester.”

The West River Wall improvement project was years in the making, with initial designs being drawn up in 2017 and construction beginning in 2020. It cost a total of $8 million to complete.
