ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Rochester Institute of Technology is getting nearly $1.5 million to train students in microelectronics.

It’s part of a $3,200,000 federal funding push announced by Senator Chuck Schumer Wednesday.

“It’s all-hands-on-deck to build the workforce of the future and awards like today’s will help classrooms across New York get students ready to be the next generation of semiconductor workers,” Schumer said in a statement released Wednesday.

RIT is one of seven organizations to receive the federal funding. According to Schumer’s office, it will use the $1,479,947 to create an online certificate program for microelectronics education. The goal is to train 555 students through the program, giving disadvantaged and underrepresented workers new opportunities and addressing microelectronics workforce shortages.
