PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WROC) — Monroe County is investing $10 million to help make towns and villages more accessible and inclusive to pedestrians.

It’s all part of the county’s transportation plan to help relieve some of the towns’ expenses.

“Previously, the way this worked is municipalities had to bear the full cost of sidewalk installation. It meant fewer sidewalks were being constructed because towns are not always able to stretch their budgets to cover the cost. The county legislature and I worked together to figure out with our partners in town government how we can change that,” said Monroe Co. Executive Adam Bello.

So far, Monroe Co. has spent about 40 percent of the $10 million with the approval of six miles of sidewalks.

Among the first to be included are Brighton, Brockport, Chili, Mendon, Penfield, Perinton, Riga, and Pittsford.

“This is the important next step and a win for the county with a new sidewalk on a county road. It’s a win for the town with a further step in making it safer for people to get around Pittsford by foot and by bike,” said Bill Smith, Pittsford town supervisor.

In addition, the county is also working with the NYS Department of Transportation to make travel easier on bicyclists.

“Whether it’s sidewalks along county roads or new bike lanes, we’re working together to further our community,” said Bello.

Bello adds Monroe Co. intends to invest more money with additional funding to more municipalities in the future.

The county provided the following areas that are included in the construction:
