WEBSTER, N.Y. (WROC) — For most, golf is not on the typical fall activities list. However, golfers tend to enjoy this part of the season because of the cooler temperatures and can look forward to getting in a few more rounds before the winter season.

“Perfect day for us would be any sunshine, once the leaves start to change, 70 degrees and sunny. People just love it because it’s not too hot,” says Patrick Kanealey, who is the director of outside operations at the Webster Golf Club.

Weather, such as heavy rain and snow, could speed up the closing process. However, sunny and dry days could elongate the closing date.

“We look for a window anywhere between October 15th and November 15th. Usually somewhere in there, we’ll need to close,” Director of Operations at Webster Golf Club Debby Murphy said.

Once the directors decide that the course needs to close for the upcoming winter season, there is a ton of work that needs to be done.

“We get all of the golf carts, we take those, make sure they are all clean, waxed and that the batteries are charged 100%. The driving range, we look to get all of the golf balls picked up,” says Kanealey. “The golf course is a little bit more, where you need to, for protection, you need to make sure that you put some chemicals down, snow mold, things that put the golf course to bed basically,” Murphy said.

Just because the course is closed for the winter, Webster Golf Club offers golfing all year round, just not always outdoors.

“We have our new simulator building. We have six track-man simulators. We have a fall league and a winter league. We have kids programs, so we are flying all winter long,” Murphy said.
