ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Town of Brighton celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month Friday, honoring several people from the community.

The honorees included Andy and Carmen Bailey of Carmen’s Cooking, Captain Jose Caraballo of the Brighton Police Department, and Nydia Padilla-Rodriguez of Borinquen Dance Theater.

The celebration included a performance by the dance theater.

“For me, I think it’s important to educate the community about who we are as a people,” Padilla-Rodriguez said. “We’re very unique in terms of coming in all shades of color because of the influence of Taino Arawak indigenous, the African and the European Spanish influences that make us people who love to celebrate family values, principles of working together in unity, regardless of your race, regardless of your religion, regardless of your color. And that’s what Hispanic heritage is really all about.”

The celebration is part of the town’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, diversity, and equity.
